Last January for two weekends, Barcelona-based art-collective BlablabLab cobbled together a kit printer and some Microsoft Kinects to create an interactive 3D printing installation on the city's famed La Rambla. Inspired by human statues, artists who stand perfectly still for hours in make-up to entertain tourists, BlablabLab scanned posing passers-by using three Kinects (one for each dimension) and then printed out miniature statues of them to keep as souvenirs. The RapMan kit printer was used to make the figurines and it was programmed to read the Kinect data via custom software, all developed using free and open software (openFrameworks and openKinect).

Unusual, and as much physical as digital, we think this approach to building Social Currency deserves the SC100+ attention for it's effectiveness in building conversation and providing valuable information (about the new technology spearheaded by Microsoft Kinect and about the Barcelona's street art). By allowing passersby to express themselves in a miniature format, this initiative effectively fosters the identity dimension of social currency. The initiative doesn't, however, score much on advocacy, affiliation, and/or utility due to the fact that the interaction is mostly between the brand and the users, and not as much between the users themselves.
